It seems that local government have cycles of employing people and, right now, there isn't much on offer. I have been told that the month or so after the end of the financial year is a good time for new positions to be advertised, and this seemed to be the case with our job lists.
Networking and patience
If you can, volunteer at a library. They may not accept volunteers so be prepared to travel to find one that does. I have met three people at my library who started out as volunteer shelvers, and they were encouraged to apply for a job with the library.
Don't set your sights on the "library of your dreams" - I think you know what I mean. Be prepared to apply out of your area for casual work. You may find, as I did, that it is a great way to start.
Retail?
Having coffee during the week with one of our group, we wondered whether it might be an option to apply for casual or p/t work in a bookshop? You would be getting paid, you would be working with books (which you like right?), and you could write on your resume that you have relevant customer service experience. Just a thought.
Have a good week
Terry
